Rebirth

In the capitalist economic system of a global community, expansion of central power creates and expands its own civilisation to become a centre of free trade at the expense of smaller non-global communities. This creates a movement of immigration from country sides to cities. This is because the city has much more capability of economic and infrastructural development such as education , employment, public health, transportation. This increase of capitalism causes the population decline in the country side, which also has plentiful resources itself. The country side communities become obliged to produce and send to the outside until the structure of a community disappears and deteriorates.

This video installation was created by an artist who was participating in the “Tokachi Artist in Residence” in the town of Urahoro-Cho, Hokkaido, Japan. This video installation represents the idea of population decline in a country side and its effects to a people in a small town. This work observes the situation impassively and does not judge any thing. All in all, this is only to express viewpoints of many issues without considering the concept of right or wrong, good nor bad, but looking into causes and consequences which later become surrounding incidents that leave nothing but questions to the townspeople of what will happen next.

国際社会における資本主義経済システムにおいては、小さな地域社会を犠牲にしながら、権力と文明が集中する「中央」が誕生し、自由貿易の中心となるべく成長する。これは地方から、教育、雇用、公衆衛生、交通、経済とインフラ整備の多くの機能がある都市へ人々が離れる動きを作りだす。こうした現象は、本来は豊富な人的資源を持つ地方の人口減少の原因である。こうして、地域社会は衰退し消失するまで、そのリソースを一方的に外部に送りだすだけの役割に陥る。 　この映像作品を伴うインスタレーションは、北海道浦幌町において開催された「とかちアーティストイン·レジデンス」に参加した作家によって制作され、地方における人口減少と、それが小さな町の人々に及ぼす影響について表現している。作品の表現は、そうした状況を淡々と客観的に物語っているのみで、なにひとつ結論づけるものでも、断罪するものでもない。 　今ここに起きている多様な状況や、そこに至る要因など多くの問題について、善悪や良し悪しなどの単純な二元論で判断するのではなく、原因と結果ありのままを表現するにとどまっている。さらに、展示期間後にはすべて撤収され、何ひとつとして形のあるものを残さない。 ただ、「次に何が起こるのか？」という問いを浦幌町に住む人々に投げかけるだけのものである。

Video installation represents the idea about the “collapse of self”. Every thing is nothing by itself, and people define self from nothing. Death and birth happens at the same time, and every thing effects each other. The artist uses this idea to create video installations. Rebirth , is a video which refers to the idea of death and birth, that everything is conditioned by nature, and one change from one form to another. As the flower represents lifelessness, it is drained to frost, then slowly flourishes once again. Mysterious Allure , is a story from an elderly man in a seaside town. The story is about ghost fish that lives in the deep sea. It tempts youth through fascinating lures. Allured people are taken to the mountain. At the time they are absent-minded. Then they are eaten by ghost fish. It is beautiful but poisonous, is a text that refers to the desire of satisfaction, and produces a beauty need factor from the outside and the transition of senses to the feelings inside. It is easy to be fascinated and requited. If there is no comprehension of self impulses and mind restraint, then there will easily be passion and also an unending desire to thrive on. The artist uses these artworks as a medium to record remembrances and experiences in his past by using the art process to understand self and the expression of the interaction between past and future.

映像作品は「自己崩壊」に関する着想を表現している。すべてはそれ自体、空であり、人々はただ虚から自ら自己を定義するのみである。死と誕生は同時に発生し、すべてのものは互いに関わりを持っている。こうした仏教の思想をもとに作家は制作をおこなった。 作品「Rebirth転生」は、すべては自然によって調整され、形ある何かは、さらに違ったものへと変化していくという死と誕生を着想としている。 花は生命の不在を現し、それが霜となって流れ出ていき、再びゆっくりと生気を取り戻す。 「Mysterious Allure　魔性の魅力」は、海辺の町に住む高齢者によって語られた物語である。深海に住む怪魚は魅惑的な雰囲気を漂わせて若者を誘惑し、かどわかされた者たちは、夢鬱のまま山奥に連れ去られ、ついに食べられてしまう。 「 It is beautiful but poisonous　それは美しいけれど毒がある」は充足への欲求を表現している。さらに、外からの刺激として与えられる美が内的な感覚へと変化するさまを表している。 心奪われたその衝動を満たすことは、容易い。自身の衝動を掌握し心の抑制を保たなければ、いとも簡単に果てない欲望と激情に翻弄され、それらを鎮めることはできない。 作家は、過去と未来の相互作用から生まれる表現と自己理解を促す芸術的過程を通じ、自身の追憶や経験を記録する媒体として作品を制作した。
